The Carol I Park, situated at the foot of the Filaret Hill, has preserved its initial Romantic air. Created by the French landscapist Emile Redont in 1906 on a 36-ha.-large area, initially only for the purpose of housing a huge international exhibition, the park is celebrated for its beautiful fountain built by the mayor of the city during that period, George Cantacuzino. The more recent Monument to the Unknown Hero, close to the lake, and the statue of the ôGiantö, the work of the celebrated Romanian sculptor Dimitrie Paciurea (1873-1932), add to the beauty of the chestnut-tree lined alleys of this park.
